How Stripe Fees Work

Stripe uses a simple per-transaction pricing model with no monthly fees, no setup costs, and no cancellation penalties. Each successful card payment incurs two charges:

  • A percentage fee based on the transaction amount (e.g. 2.9% in the US)
  • A fixed fee per transaction (e.g. $0.30 in the US)

For example, on a $100 US transaction, Stripe charges $3.20 in fees and you receive $96.80. The fixed component means smaller transactions have a higher effective rate — a $10 payment costs 5.9% effective, not 2.9%.

Stripe Fees by Country (2026)

Stripe's processing fees vary by region. Domestic card payments in the EU and UK are significantly cheaper than in the US. International cards add 1.5%, and currency conversion adds 1% on top of these base rates.

Additional Stripe Fees to Know About

Beyond standard card processing, Stripe charges for specific services and situations:

  • Disputes / chargebacks: $15.00 per dispute (refunded if you win)
  • International cards: +1.5% on top of base rate
  • Currency conversion: +1% on top of base rate
  • Stripe Billing (subscriptions): +0.5% per recurring charge
  • Stripe Invoicing: 0.4% per paid invoice (first 25/month free)
  • ACH Direct Debit: 0.8%, capped at $5.00
  • Instant payouts: 1% of payout amount (minimum $0.50)

Stripe does not charge monthly fees, setup fees, or PCI compliance fees. Failed charges are not billed. Refunded transactions retain the original processing fee.

How to Reduce Your Stripe Fees

While Stripe's standard rates are fixed, there are strategies to lower your overall processing costs:

  1. Negotiate volume pricing — businesses processing over $80,000/month can contact Stripe for custom rates
  2. Use ACH for large payments — at 0.8% capped at $5, ACH is much cheaper than cards for high-value transactions
  3. Minimize international transactions — encourage customers to use local payment methods to avoid the 1.5% surcharge
  4. Reduce chargebacks — each dispute costs $15 regardless of outcome, so clear billing descriptors and good customer service save money
  5. Batch small transactions — the fixed $0.30 fee hits hardest on small amounts, so consider minimum order values

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Stripe charge per transaction?

Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per successful card charge in the US. International cards add 1.5%, and currency conversion adds an extra 1%. Rates vary by country — for example, 1.4% + €0.25 in the EU and 1.75% + A$0.30 in Australia.

Does Stripe charge a monthly fee?

No. Stripe has no monthly fees, setup fees, or cancellation fees. You only pay per-transaction processing fees. This pay-as-you-go model makes Stripe suitable for businesses of all sizes.

What is Stripe's fee for international transactions?

Stripe adds 1.5% on top of the standard rate for international cards. If currency conversion is also needed, there's an additional 1% fee. So a US merchant receiving an international payment with conversion would pay 2.9% + 1.5% + 1% + $0.30 = 5.4% + $0.30.

How do Stripe fees work for subscriptions?

Stripe Billing charges the standard per-transaction rate (e.g. 2.9% + $0.30 in the US) on each recurring payment. There's an additional 0.5% fee for Stripe Billing usage on recurring charges, or 0.8% if using Stripe Tax.

Can I negotiate lower Stripe fees?

Yes. Stripe offers custom pricing for businesses processing over $80,000 per month. Contact Stripe sales to negotiate volume discounts. Many high-volume merchants get rates as low as 2.2% + $0.30 or better.

Does Stripe refund processing fees on refunded transactions?

No. When you issue a refund through Stripe, the original processing fee is not returned. You'll also pay the processing fee on the refunded amount. This is the same policy as most payment processors.
